At Traditional Martial Arts Academy, our Neigong program is broken up into four seasonal semesters.  Your body, mind and spirit go through cycles that reflect the changes in conditions over the course of a year.  Our program recognizes this and is designed to teach you how to harmonize your health with the nature of each season.  In the Chinese theory of Five Phases, Autumn is the time of Metal, an element that is created by gathering substance from the Earth and transforming it through reduction.  This suggests a season of gathering, yet eliminating that which is unnecessary, a process that parallels harvest when we collect and store for the coming winter.

Topics Covered in the Class

Taiji Shen Gong (太极神功) – Working with the Spirit Taiji
This Taoist form is designed to harmonize the practitioner with nature as it flows through three sections—Heaven, Earth and Humanity—and helps to improve health through balance of Yin and Yang.  The movements range from slow to fast and will benefit beginners and experts alike.  In the process of learning Taiji Shen Gong, you will improve flexibility, strength and grace in your movements.

San Xin Qigong (三心气功) – Three Hearts Qi Exercise
A deceptively simple exercise, San Xin Qigong is both a calming and energizing practice.  Focused on basic finger movements synchronized with the breath, this form improves Qi circulation throughout the body, balances Yin and Yang, and strengthens the Mind and Spirit.  A simplified version of this form is taught to all of the children in our Pyon Moo Do Kids program to help with emotional balance and brain development.  This an excellent exercise for calming and focusing the mind.

11-Step Breathing (十一步呼吸)
This basic Taiji exercise unites simple movement with basic breathing.  Breath, body and mind merge as the practitioner gains access to true moving meditation – not simply a relaxing exercise, but a method for stilling the mind and becoming present in the moment.

Basics of Meditation
During this course, we will explore the foundations of meditation through proper breath, posture and mind.  As Autumn is the transition between the expansive radiance of Summer and the quiet stillness of Winter, meditation grounds us as we move from the agitation and stress of daily life and become more contemplative and centered.
